Understanding diamond characteristics are important when you buy your engagement diamond ring. You should pay attention to some factors called 4 Cs, those are Carat, Cut, Colour, and Clarity
Carat Weight
Diamonds can be measured in Carat Weight. One carat weighs 200 milligrams. A diamond weighing 50 points is called 1/2 carat; one that weighs 75 points is called 3/4 carat.
Cut
Diamond’s cut is very important factor to consider. Good cut of diamond sparkle beautifully when hit by light. There are many different type of cuts:
- Brilliant cut which has many faces.
- Step cut which has only four side faces
- Emerald cut which also has four side faces but the corners are removed.
The most popular cut for engagement diamond is brilliant cut, where many faces allow the reflection of the light making it sparkle from different point.
Colour
Diamonds are available in different colours ranges from colourless to a yellowish brown. Other colour is also available such as pink, blue and green. The most high quality and expensive is a diamond without colour.
Clarity
Clarity levels start with Flawless and move down to Very Very Slight (VVS), Very Slight (VS) and Slightly Included (SI). Clarity is influenced by carbon impurity of diamonds. It can be observed under 10 power magnifications. The fewer the carbon impurities, the higher the diamond’s clarity.

- Round-Shaped Diamond. This is the most popular and expensive diamonds for engagement rings.
